This 5 hour workshop will give students the ability to see value in a whole new light and the tools to improve and strengthen their paintings. To quote a famous phrase “Colour gets the glory but value does the work.”

Topics covered: – Why value is so important – How to see value – The importance of value studies and notan to support the composition and establish a strong value structure.

The workshop will begin with a slide presentation and discussion followed by a demo and then the painting exercise. The main exercise is done in soft pastel. Some pastels will be available for use during the class but please let Joan know ahead of time if you would like her to bring pastels for you to use.

Working quickly while wearing laser enhancement (red plastic) glasses supplied by the instructor, students will select a palette of colours based on value alone. Using these colours and wearing the glasses, students will produce a small painting. The results are always exciting and surprising! A variety of photo reference will be provided for this exercise.

There will be a half hour lunch break.
