Painting en plein air can be a joy for capturing your feelings of the scenes in front of you! This is not a class for beginner painters. Advanced beginners and beyond.
Knowing what to bring for an en plein air setup with your medium (oils, acrylic, watercolours, and pastels) can be a challenge. You want to bring it all but know that this is not necessary or require to be able to create in comfort and freedom while in the great outdoors. Next question that crosses your mind, what is the best way to start painting on location since it seems rather BIG and overwhelming!
Day One (studio) – we will talk about various types of outdoor easels and gear. I will bring some of my favourite easels that work for me on location. The objective is to bring the minimal amount of supplies while allowing for the maximum in painting on location. I will share my thoughts on palette choices, tips for minimal cleanup, how to lighten that load of art gear you are carrying, how to transport wet paintings, even what to wear. Lastly what not to say at airport security when traveling with paints.
Day Two (on location) – we will venture out on location with our painting gear, and set up to paint. A small demo will be done, followed by you painting a small plein air sketch. At the end of this session, a quick critique on our set ups and paintings.
Supplies – to be discussed at the first session. I have extra outdoor easels that you can borrow for the second session.
Very Important! A sense of humour.
