Become part of the Coast Collective

There are 5 ways for people to get involved with the Coast Collective Art Centre, as a:

 

  1. Associate Program Member
  2. Gallery Artist
  3. Gift Shop Artist
  4. Member of SASI
  5. Volunteer

 

Associate Program Member

 

ANNUAL Membership/Subscription Fee - $150/year + GST (or $12.50/month in pre-authorized monthly payments) – Members/subscribers are also required to provide 72 hours of service to the operation of the Society for Arts on the South Island (SASI) and the Coast Collective Art Centre.

 

BENEFITS of the Membership/Subscription

  1. Individual Voting Membership (valued at $50) in the Society for Arts on the South Island (SASI), the not-for-profit community arts organization that operates the Coast Collective Art Centre. A Voting Membership entitles the holder to vote (in-person only) at general meetings of the society (annual elections, special general meetings), nominate or be nominated to run for a seat on the board of directors at the society’s annual general meeting, and can recommend motions for the consideration of the SASI Board of Directors. Any member of the public may attend a regularly scheduled meeting of SASI’s board of directors, which are held monthly and generally the third Thursday of the month at 6:30pm;
  2. Reduced commission charged on sales of work in the Coast Collective’s gallery shows and gift shop (25% instead of 50%);
  3. Eligibility to enter one exclusive juried gallery show per year open only to the Coast Collective's Associate Program participants;
  4. Eligibility to participate in the Roaming Gallery program to hang one-man shows in small venues, rotating every couple of months (MLAs offices, legal offices, etc.), with a sales commission of 20% charged on sales of work at these locations (remains unchanged from the previous Coast Collective Associate Program);
  5. Eligibility to participate in the Art Space program to hang with group shows in large venues rotating every couple of months (e.g. Café Fresh at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre), with a sales commission of 20% charged on sales of work at these locations (remains unchanged from the previous Coast Collective Associate Program);
  6. Eligibility to have your work included in the Westridge Collection which will be an exclusive area of the Coast Collective Art Centre’s new home at Westridge Landing, with a sales commission of 25% charged on sales of work at this location;
  7. Eligibility to participate in the Coast Collective’s Fort Rodd Hill & Fisgard Lighthouse Artist-in-Residence program and seasonal satellite gift shop, with 12% sales commission charged on sales at this location;
  8. 10% Discounts on Coast Collective workshops;
  9. Eligibility to participate in occasional off-site shows and special project opportunities exclusive to the Coast Collective's Associate Program participants; and
  10. Link from the Coast Collective website to Associate Program participant websites.

 

Associate Program Members – ANNUAL SERVICE REQUIREMENTS

 

Associate Program members/subscribers are required to contribute 72 hours of community service to the arts each year, or agree to pay a further $150/year plus GST or a mutually acceptable combination of hours and cash equal to the required contribution of 72 hours per year. Their service can take a variety of forms:

 

Service in the gallery/gift shop/classroom:

  • Demonstrating your art/craft for the public to enjoy;
  • Cashiering, greeting and serving the visiting public and providing information about the gallery/gift
  • shop artists and other area attractions, including the Coast Collective’s nearby Art Space at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre (where the work of our Associate Program members’ work hangs (much closer to the gallery), and summer Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program/gift shop at Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites;
  • Chronicling gallery/gift shop and workshop activities through photography and videography that can enhance the Coast Collective’s social media presence;
  • Providing curatorial, marketing and administrative support (i.e. helping to hang gallery
  • Shows and display gift shop inventory, posting advertising information online, postering of show/event information, delivery/drop-off of rack cards promoting the Coast
  • Collective, inventory data entry, etc.); and
  • Providing housekeeping support (i.e. re-painting plinths and walls, cleaning glass, tidying
  • up in the classroom, etc.).
  • Service in support of community events:
  • Working with district art teachers on the annual student art show, which involves middle and high school students from throughout the Sooke School District;
  • Participating in an arts mentorship program linking high school art students with practicing artists in the Coast Collective community;
  • Coordinating the annual children’s art show;
  • Staffing/Demonstrating at the Coast Collective’s booth at community events like the
  • annual Mothers’ Day Paint-in and Craft Fair at Royal Roads University, Canada Day at Fort Rodd Hill & Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites, other regional events/festivals, etc.; and
  • Chronicling the Coast Collective’s community events through photography and videography that can enhance our social media presence.

 

Gallery Artist – Submitting their work for adjudication in relation to the Calls to Artists associated with the Coast Collective’s gallery exhibits. If the work is accepted into the show, the artist agrees to pay a 50% commission on the sale of any work from the show, and a 10% Finder’s Fee if the work sells later as a result of the purchaser finding it through the Coast Collective exhibit. Gallery Artists are not required to contribute time to the community art centre, but they are encouraged and welcome to do so if they are able and wish to, and such an investment of their time would be appreciated. Artists submitting work from outside of the Greater Victoria area are responsible for the cost of shipping/insurance of their works in transit to and from the Coast Collective Art Centre.

 

Gift Shop Artist – Submitting their work for adjudication in relation to the Calls to Artists and Craftspeople associated with the Coast Collective’s Gift Shop. If the work satisfies the Adjudication Criteria, the artist/craftsperson agrees to pay a 50% commission on the sale of their work, and a 10% Finder’s Fee if the work sells later as a result of the purchaser finding it through the Coast Collective Gift Shop. (Updated Gift Shop Adjudication Criteria is available). Gift Shop Artists are not required to contribute time to the community art centre, but they are encouraged and welcome to do so if they are able and wish to, and such an investment of their time would be appreciated.

 

Member of SASI – Annual Individual and Business Voting Memberships (valued at $50 and $100 respectively) are available in the Society for Arts on the South Island (SASI), the not-for- profit community arts organization that operates the Coast Collective Art Centre. A Voting Membership entitles the holder to vote (in-person only) at general meetings of the society (annual elections, special general meetings), nominate or be nominated to run for a seat on the board of directors at the society’s annual general meeting, and can recommend motions for the consideration of the SASI Board of Directors. Individual Non-Voting Memberships are also available for $25/year. Any member of the public may attend a regularly scheduled meeting of SASI’s board of directors, which are held monthly and generally the third Tuesday of the month at 6pm. Join now.

 

Volunteer – The Society for Arts on the South Island (SASI), which operates the Coast Collective Art Centre, has a mandate to nurture British Columbia arts and culture and southern Vancouver Island’s cultural economy, through the production and support of public showcases of fine art and craft, the provision of arts education programs, as well as public performances and special community cultural events which contribute to the vibrancy of our region.
