This workshop is about pairing an abstract encaustic painting with a digital image collage into a completed encaustic mosaic. A collage sheet with vintage advertising images will be provided to each student. 

The workshop will be taught in modules where students will learn a different technique at each station. The stations will include basics on encaustic painting, image preparation for encaustic collage, creating the mosaic blocks, making a balanced grid composition, and displaying the final artwork in a shadowbox frame. 

 Student will need to bring the following items: 
 - Pencil and eraser 
 - X-ACTO knife and extra blades 
 -  Box-cutting knife (with snap-able blades) 
 - Self-healing cutting mat 
 - Clear plastic ruler 
 - Wood ruler with metal edge 
 - Hot glue gun with extra glue refills 
 - Apron or paint smock to protect clothes from encaustic paint

 Instructor will be providing the following items: 

- Digital collage sheet on matte photo paper 
   - Black foamcore board 
   - Terraskin paper 16pt 
   - Clear encaustic medium 
 - Encaustic paint 
 - Gold leaf 
    - Metallic glitter 
    - 10" x 10" black shadowbox frame

About Alexandra Reid 

Alexandrai s a Victoria, BC mixed-media artist who works primarily with encaustic paint, but also incorporates collage and resin into her artworks. With her background in molecular biology, she brings an orderly view to the free form work of hot wax painting. Her novel technique of creating encaustic mosaics was given an in-depth article in the mixed-media magazine, Cloth Paper Scissors and they have also been featured in Somerset Studio magazine. Recently, her ‘Ruby’ encaustic mosaic won ‘Best in Mixed-Media’ at the 18th Annual LOOK Show 2017 in Victoria. 

Alexandra creates hand-made jewellery from encaustic paint and resin, and a collection of this jewellery has been featured in the Belle Armoire Jewelry magazine. Her encaustic jewellery is currently for sale at the Coast Collective Gift Shop. 

She is an active member of the Coast Collective Art Centre, the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria, the Community Arts Council of the Saanich Peninsula, the Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts Society, and the Island Artisans Association.
